The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
