This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
